Pre-school Education
3-6 years old
Although education for children under the age of six is not compulsory, many parents enroll their children in pre-school when they are three.
The aim of early childhood education is to contribute to the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development of a child.
Pre-schools are often located within the same complex as a primary school.
Primary School Education
6-1 years old
Compulsory primary education lasts for six years.Â
The primary curriculum includes mathematics, Spanish language (Castellano) and literature, natural and social science, physical education, plastic and visual arts, and a foreign language and optional Catholic religion.
Secondary Education
12-18 years old
Secondary education begins at the age of 12 and lasts for four to six years. It is compulsory until the age of 16.
Compulsory subjects include mathematics, Spanish language, literature, natural and social sciences, history and geography, physical education, plastic and visual arts, a foreign language, music and technology.
Vocational Education
16-18 years old
Vocational training involves a combination of classroom studies and practical, on-the-job training. Students who successfully complete their vocational training are granted the Certificado de TĂ©cnico in their respective field. This certification enables them to work in fields related to their training or pursue further educational opportunities.
